Curator: What a ghostly presence this little drawing has. It’s by John Flaxman, who was born in 1755 and died in 1826. It’s a study of the mitre and crozier of Dr. Lawton, Bishop of St. David’s. Editor: You’re right, it’s like a memory surfacing. The soft washes and delicate lines create such a gentle, almost ethereal feel. Is this how power fades? Curator: It's fascinating how Flaxman, known for his neoclassical outlines, approaches religious iconography. We often see Flaxman addressing institutional power with subtle critique. Editor: Yes, it’s more suggestion than statement, isn't it? A hint of authority, gently rendered as if mindful of its potential to overwhelm. It’s almost…apologetic. Curator: I think it demonstrates how even the most potent symbols are ultimately fragile, dependent on the perception of the observer and the societal context in which they exist. Editor: I like that, it reminds us to look again, to question what we assume, doesn’t it?
