Antoon Derkinderen drew this design for a stained-glass window, titled "De Goede Raad", with graphite, maybe, on paper. You can see all the artist’s notes around it, the writing adds so much to the piece as a whole, with the details of the potential colours next to the sketch. I love the way you can see the artist working through the design, making marks, trying things out. You can almost feel him thinking about the shapes and how they’ll fit together, like a puzzle. Look at the central image, with the people sitting around a table. The design is clear, but there is a liveliness to the line work, as if he is making it up as he goes along. It reminds me of a drawing by Paula Rego, a similar use of line and colour. What connects them is this idea of art as an ongoing conversation. It shows us that art isn’t about having all the answers, but embracing the questions.
