Robert Frank’s “Pablo V” is a series of film strips that capture fragmented moments, like a painter exploring variations of a theme. It's all black and white, full of contrast, like he's pushing the limits of what the film can hold. I can imagine Frank in his darkroom, playing with light and shadow. The images are hazy, dreamlike. In one strip, there’s a still life with flowers, a chair, a framed picture on the wall. In another, an outdoor scene, a landscape. Then he returns to the interior, the same still life viewed from a slightly different angle. It’s like he's searching for something, circling around an idea. The grainy texture makes me think about the physicality of the medium, the way the light etches itself onto the film. It feels spontaneous, intuitive, each frame a response to the one before. It’s like Frank is in conversation with himself, using the camera to think through feeling. And that's how artists find new ways of seeing, not just showing what's there, but revealing what could be.
