Aert van der Neer was a Dutch painter known for his atmospheric night scenes. "River Landscape with Ships at Moonrise" from c. 1660-1670 features a river scene with ships sailing against a dramatic twilight sky, lit by a rising moon. The painting captures the soft glow of the moon illuminating the water and the silhouette of a town in the distance, a signature element of van der Neer's work. This piece is now on display at the Städel Museum, where it is an excellent example of the Dutch Golden Age's fascination with landscapes and its mastery of atmospheric effects.
