Curator: The rendering of the lace, it’s so meticulous! It indicates, I think, a very deliberate staging. One wonders about the workshop conditions, the division of labor in the making of this… how many artisans contributed to crafting this single, visual assertion of wealth and lineage? Editor: Absolutely. And notice the deliberate symbolism within the setting itself. He’s positioned near a partial view of a classic landscape with strong vertical tree trunks. I see echoes of strength and stability but with this glimpse of the outdoors almost like a captured desire. He’s trapped by the social dictates. Curator: His garments speak to that trapping you describe. That fabric must have been a nightmare to work with, particularly the heavy brocade and detailing around the knees. The labor needed to produce such clothing reflects so starkly on the labor it must have extracted. Editor: Indeed.
