This table clock, likely crafted in the 17th century by Jan Janse Boekelts, encapsulates the intricate relationship between time, knowledge, and power during the rise of global trade. Imagine a world rapidly expanding through maritime exploration, where the precise measurement of time was not just a daily convenience, but a critical tool for navigation and commerce. This clock, with its ornate detailing and sophisticated mechanism, speaks to the period's fascination with both science and art. It reflects a society deeply invested in understanding and controlling the natural world. Boekelt's clock embodies not only technological advancement, but a shift in how people perceived their place in the cosmos. This object serves as a potent reminder of how time, often seen as a neutral measure, is deeply entwined with social, economic, and intellectual transformation.

Usually a table clock is housed in a case in order to protect the movement from dust and dirt. Without a case, it becomes clear that it is an extremely refined object of vertu. The work thus had not only a practical function, but was meant to be picked up and admired from all sides.
