August Allebé drew this sketch of a reclining lion with graphite on paper. The values in the drawing are achieved by modulating the pressure on the graphite, as the artist applied the medium to the page. The direction of the stroke and hatching also help model the form of the lion. Notice the swiftness of line, particularly in the body. Here, the artist is clearly more interested in capturing the form and expression of the lion, than in rendering it with photographic accuracy. Drawing is an essential practice for artists, as a means of exploring line, form, and composition. In this sketch, the artist conveys the subject's vitality through the simple act of drawing, reminding us of the skill and intention involved in its making. This elevates the drawing beyond its functional status as preparatory sketch, to an artwork in its own right.
