Simon Moulijn made this print, Bos, using etching. It's all about the act of close looking; the tone is built up with such fine marks that the whole scene shimmers. Look at how the texture is created through tiny lines and dots, a real labour of love. See that cluster of foliage to the left? It's like a little universe of marks, each one carefully placed, creating a dense, almost tactile surface. The way the light filters through the trees, it’s a masterclass in subtle variation. It reminds me of Whistler, who also had a way of taking something ordinary, like a landscape, and turning it into something mysterious, almost dreamlike, through process. Art is always a conversation, right? This piece invites us to slow down, to lose ourselves in the details, and to find beauty in the unexpected.
