This is a print called ‘De Hond’ by Gordinne. It’s of a dog, next to a kennel, and the palette is muted, mainly browns, tans, and blacks. I wonder about Gordinne, about their touch, and the choices they made, and what came before. Look at the lines that define the dog, they seem kind of tentative. What does it mean to render this animal with such a specific kind of mark-making? The dog looks kind of sad or lost. Is this due to the coloring, or the thinness of the paint, which doesn't so much cover the surface as stain it? The image might have been created by a younger artist who is learning to draw, and is also thinking about care, and pets, and what animals mean to us. It's a scene full of pathos, like a visual poem! And I always think about how artists are in an ongoing conversation, you know, across time, inspiring one another’s creativity.
