Johannes Tavenraat created "Haas en koppen" with pen in ink on paper. What immediately strikes us is the stark contrast between the delicate, almost frantic lines of the sketches, and the rough, torn edge of the paper. The use of line is particularly expressive here. Each stroke varies in thickness and intensity, creating depth and texture while also suggesting movement. In structuralist terms, these lines function as signs. A single, bold stroke might define a contour, while a series of lighter, rapid strokes could imply shadow or detail. The sketches are seemingly unfinished, almost as if glimpsed in a fleeting moment. This approach challenges the traditional academic ideal of a polished, complete work, suggesting a more modern sensibility focused on process and the immediacy of perception. It invites us to reconsider the artistic value in what is sketched and provisional, and the destabilization of formal qualities and artistic conventions.
