Jan Toorop created this portrait of Nurse Nelly using pencil, crayon, and chalk. During Toorop’s life, the role of women in society was undergoing significant change, with many entering the workforce. Nursing, in particular, became a symbol of female strength and compassion. Here, Nelly’s crisp uniform and composed expression speak to the professionalism expected in this role. However, there’s also a hint of vulnerability in her gaze, a reminder that behind every caregiver is a person with their own emotions and experiences. Notice how Toorop refrains from idealizing Nelly. He presents her with a quiet dignity, challenging traditional representations of women. By portraying Nurse Nelly with such empathy, Toorop invites us to consider the vital work of nurses and the complex humanity of those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.

Petronella Alida Goudkade, ‘Nurse Nelly’, married the writer Ary Prins in 1894. Toorop may have made this portrait of her shortly before her wedding. Nelly worked as a parish nurse in a Hague hospital. Behind her is a vague fanciful pattern of birds. This type of portrait is one of the first of a long series that Toorop would continue to make in the following years.
