Luca Giordano created this painting, Cybele, in the late 17th century. Here, the Phrygian earth goddess Cybele is portrayed with a maternal and regal bearing. During the Baroque period, the revival of classical themes provided artists like Giordano the opportunity to explore the human condition. Note how Giordano uses vibrant color and dynamic composition to engage the viewer. Cybele, surrounded by a retinue of figures and animals, embodies fertility and abundance, while the act of breastfeeding underscores her role as the nurturing mother of all creation. Giordano acknowledges the traditional representations of mythological figures while subtly imbuing Cybele with a sense of humanity and warmth. In doing so he invites viewers to contemplate the enduring power of motherhood and the interconnectedness of humanity and nature.
