Editor: We're looking at Childe Hassam's sketch, Saint Michael's, Charleston, South Carolina. I'm struck by the imposing architecture, particularly how the columns frame the church steeple in the distance. What can you tell us about the historical context of this work? Curator: Well, Hassam was an American Impressionist, and this piece likely captures a moment in Charleston's history. Consider the prominent church and classical architecture. How do you think they reflect the socio-political power structures of the time? Editor: I suppose it emphasizes the established order, doesn't it? The church and grand buildings represent wealth and influence. Curator: Exactly. And Charleston, even during Hassam’s time, carried a complex history of race and class. How might that be subtly present, or even absent, from the image? Editor: That's a really good point. I'm now noticing how few people are depicted, and their anonymity. Curator: Right. Hassam’s choices regarding subject matter and composition can be quite revealing about the public role of art and the politics of imagery. It's about what's included, and what's intentionally left out. Editor: This has completely changed how I view the drawing. I'll definitely be thinking about the implied narratives in these architectural scenes from now on.
