Armenian village at sunrise 

Gevorg Bashindzhagian painted this oil on canvas, "Armenian village at sunrise," sometime between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The hazy atmosphere and soft colors create a serene, idealized view of rural Armenian life. But such images of peaceful village life carried a heavy political weight. Bashindzhagian painted during a period of intense nationalism and political upheaval in Armenia, then part of the Russian Empire. Images of Armenian culture and history served to unify and strengthen national identity in the face of external pressures. Note the traditional stone architecture, emphasizing the timelessness and endurance of Armenian culture. The sunrise may symbolize hope and renewal for the Armenian people.
