This untitled drawing by the Kukryniksy collective from 1942, feels raw, like it was made in the heat of the moment. The bold lines and stark contrast really grab your attention. You can almost feel the artists’ hand moving across the paper. I’m drawn to the way the artists use line to create a sense of motion and chaos. It's like they're not just depicting a scene, but also conveying the emotional intensity of the moment. Look at the dripping lines around the figure being dunked in the tub; they're not just water, they're like tears or sweat or something else entirely. I love how those drips add to the overall feeling of discomfort, while amplifying the dark humour of the piece. This piece reminds me of Goya's etchings. They share that same sense of urgency and social commentary, as well as that idea that art can be a powerful weapon in times of conflict. For me, it’s a reminder that art can be both beautiful and brutal, often at the same time.
