This commemorative pewter plate of the KLM Holland-Indië flight in 1924 was made by Gero fabriek. It’s interesting to think of the process of making multiples, pressing into metal to create this bas-relief effect; the idea of production, of making many of something, is right there in the material. The texture and surface speak to this directly, with its slightly dull grey sheen and the marks left by the tools, that become part of the image. I keep coming back to the plane itself. You can almost feel the wind buffeting it, rendered in these very deliberate lines. I'm reminded of the work of Jan Toorop, with his own distinct brand of symbolism, or perhaps even the social dedication of Käthe Kollwitz. Art is an ongoing conversation; always referencing and remaking itself. This piece embraces this sense of history, leaving room for us to reflect on the past while engaging with the present.
