Editor: Here we have Richard Lindner's "Homage to a Cat". It's striking! The woman's gaze is so direct, yet distant. What narratives do you see at play in this piece? Curator: Lindner's work often explores themes of sexuality, power, and alienation within urban environments. Consider the woman's stylized features and the cat nestled against her. How does this Madonna-like pose subvert traditional representations of femininity, and what does it say about the relationship between women and domesticity? Editor: So, it’s about more than just a woman and her cat? Curator: Precisely. Think about the historical context: Lindner, a Jewish émigré fleeing Nazi Germany. This piece reflects how identity and belonging are constructed and challenged in a post-war world. What does the cat symbolize within that framework? Editor: Wow, that’s a lot to consider. I'll definitely look at it differently now.

Homage to a Cat is a figurative painting by the German-American artist Richard Lindner. It depicts a stylised blonde woman in a purple dress and red hat, her breasts partially exposed, holding a cat close to her body. The picture plane is almost entirely filled by her monolithic torso and head, while a marginal dark blue background emphasises the pale flesh tones in the arm and chest.
