"Pocket" (c. 1799) by Sally Standish is a patchwork sampler, a popular form of textile art in the 18th century. This example is made of squares of fabric sewn together with different patterns, including floral motifs, stripes, and geometric designs, with a small opening at the top. The work is considered a "pocket" sampler because it functions as a small storage pouch and features a decorative element in the form of the letters of the alphabet in cross-stitch embroidery. These samplers were often made by women for practice and display, showcasing their needlework skills and aesthetic sense. Currently, this artwork is housed at The Art Institute of Chicago.
