Editor: This is a carved earplug, dating back to around the 15th century. It's currently housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The texture of the stone and its smooth, almost industrial shape give it such an unusual feel. What do you see when you look at it? Curator: I observe the intersection of form and function. Notice how the artist, though anonymous, clearly prioritizes geometric simplicity. The conical shape is precise, almost austere, in its reduction to essentials. Editor: It’s interesting you say that. I hadn’t really thought about its functional element as integral to its design. So the form follows function here? Curator: Precisely. The drilled indentation and the smoothed, gradually widening cone reflect an intimate relationship to the body. Do you perceive how the surface of the stone displays evidence of process? Each cut tells of intent, decisions, even limitations that give form to the object, giving it its shape and function. Editor: So, its materiality isn’t just incidental but is essential to understanding the piece? The natural textures of the stone play off against the strict geometrical form. Curator: Precisely. The form embodies the essence of function and matter in the ancient world. The tactile, three-dimensional design gives insight into human existence as seen through this ancient carving. It embodies material, craftsmanship and concept in one contained artwork. Editor: That’s really given me a new perspective. It’s amazing to think about how much an object this small can tell us just by examining its shape, texture, and composition! Curator: Indeed. Its quiet formal vocabulary speaks volumes across the ages, transcending its original function and inviting contemplative visual examination.
