Curator: Welcome. Before us is "Don Quixote Confined and Confused" by Colin Lanceley, part of the Tate Collections. Editor: My first thought? A beautiful mess! There's such a whimsical chaos to it. Curator: Indeed. Lanceley masterfully employs line and colour to disrupt any sense of stable form. Note how the vertical bars of the 'cage' simultaneously define and fragment the central figure. Editor: He's trapped, but in such a playful way. It's as if Don Quixote's imagination itself is the prison. Curator: Precisely. The title suggests confinement, but the composition implies boundless invention. Editor: It makes you wonder what's more dangerous: external forces, or the monsters of your own making? Curator: It's a piece which invites repeated viewing. Editor: Absolutely, the more you look, the more it seems to reflect back something of your own confused self.
