This etching, "Two Farms by the Water," was made by Alexander Schaepkens, and now resides in the Rijksmuseum. The image teems with motifs of nature and dwelling. The houses, nestled amongst trees, evoke ideas of shelter. Note how the water, traditionally a symbol of the subconscious, reflects the landscape. The water could also symbolize transition and the unknown; a fisherman navigates the channel in his small boat. Consider the symbolic significance of the boat.
