This is page 75 from a ledger, made in the Colonial School for Girls and Women in The Hague sometime between 1930 and 1949. It’s anonymous, so we can only guess at the kind of person who made it, maybe a school administrator or archivist. The handwritten script is so varied, jumping between styles, weights and angles, which really emphasizes artmaking as a process. The entries almost become abstract marks, with the more formal names and dates interspersed. And then there’s the photo! Stuck right onto the page with tape, it gives the impression that this is all just a collage, and not some official document. And that feels very contemporary to me. It's like Kurt Schwitters doing bureaucracy, or maybe Sophie Calle. But I really love how the anonymous maker embraces this ambiguity and multiple interpretations, don't you?
