Editor: We're looking at a photograph of a decorative floral pattern from before 1900. It’s displayed within what seems to be a sketchbook. The aged paper and the delicate, repeating forms of the design give it a really nostalgic feel. What are your thoughts when you look at it? Curator: Indeed. Observe how the photographer has framed the image. The very conscious choice to present the floral pattern within the sketchbook immediately elevates the document to the level of the aesthetic object. It’s a presentation device but it is a means of creating a dialogue between the viewer and the internal, creative spaces of its owner. Note also how the composition itself favours a density of interwoven flora at the expense of negative space to offer maximal visual complexity, drawing the eye along the lines. Editor: I see what you mean about the presentation. What would you say is the main visual focus or key design element? Curator: Consider the interplay of texture achieved purely through tonal variation. The image creates depth, but this depth is achieved using what appears to be paper and ink only. Furthermore, the repetitive use of the floral form serves a formal structuring, it introduces an element of rhythmic progression which allows for ease of visual consumption. Editor: It's fascinating how much you can gather just by focusing on those visual elements! It makes me appreciate the composition much more. Curator: Precisely. One may find endless intrigue by parsing solely the mechanics of representation itself. Editor: I agree; I'll definitely pay closer attention to those kinds of structural choices from now on.
