Ontwerp voor raam in het Noordertransept in de Dom te Utrecht c. 1934
Dimensions height 1125 mm, width 809 mm
Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst created this design for a stained-glass window using chalk and graphite. In the upper part, you'll notice a vivid red orb floating amidst a mosaic of blue and grey stones, a striking contrast that immediately captures the eye. This orb is a solar symbol, the sun, an archetype found across cultures from ancient Egyptian art depicting Ra to the Mithraic mysteries. The sun is a symbol of enlightenment, rebirth, and the cyclical nature of time itself. Consider how the sun, throughout history, has morphed from a deity to a scientific object, yet retains its primal associations with life and energy. Its persistent presence in our collective consciousness reflects a deep-seated human fascination, a symbol that continues to evolve, engaging us on a profound, almost subconscious level. This design shows the cyclical journey of symbols, how they are perpetually reborn, adapting yet forever echoing their ancient origins.
