Ed Grazda made this photograph, Zipolite, Mexico, at an unknown date using photographic techniques. The tonality of this photograph feels immediate and raw. The stark contrasts create an intense atmosphere, full of heat and dust and life. See how the eye is drawn into the centre of the composition by the dark shadows thrown by the animals? The surface texture adds to the emotional experience. You can almost feel the dry earth under your feet. Looking closer, the monochromatic palette emphasizes the textures and the way light falls on each subject. The dog seems to be on high alert, staring off into the distance, maybe at another unseen subject, or maybe contemplating his next move. It reminds me a little of Cartier-Bresson and his decisive moments. But, here, the moment feels more open, less resolved, embracing ambiguity.
