Joshua Flint’s painting, “All the Falling Leaves” is a real lesson in oil paint economy. There’s something about the way he lets the paint drip and run that really grabs me; it’s like he's not trying to control everything, allowing for happy accidents. The red armchair, though, that’s where the magic happens. The way he’s built up that color, it’s almost like you could sink right into it. And then there’s the white dog, almost ghostly, echoing a classical statue in the background. It’s like Flint is playing with history, with different eras all layered on top of each other. It reminds me a bit of Gerhard Richter, especially the way he blurs and obscures his images. It makes you wonder what’s real and what’s just a memory. For me it’s less about answering questions, more about embracing the mystery, letting the painting lead you down its own strange path.
