Here we see the ‘Cadetten-Almanak’ for 1885, printed by Broese & Comp. Observe how the almanac is presented as an open book, its pages forming two distinct yet harmonious compositions. On the left, a sepia-toned portrait of A. Pompe is framed by an oval, a stark contrast to the rectangular layout of the text on the right. The symmetry here creates a visual dialogue, juxtaposing image and text, figure and function. The composition invites a semiotic reading: the portrait, with its meticulous details of military attire, signifies authority and tradition. In contrast, the typography, carefully arranged within decorative borders, conveys information and order. This interplay reflects the almanac’s dual purpose – commemorating individuals while serving as a structured guide. The almanac functions as a cultural artifact, inviting interpretation and engagement with the past, demonstrating that meanings are not fixed but evolve with time.
