Editor: So here we have Vittore Carpaccio’s *St. George Baptising the Gentile,* an oil painting dating back to 1507. It’s such a crowded scene, isn't it? I find the contrast between the stoic baptism and the vibrant, almost chaotic gathering quite striking. What’s your read on it? Curator: It is indeed! To me, the painting feels like Carpaccio is showing us a grand theatrical production. Think about it: he’s not just depicting a religious event but staging a clash of cultures, a performance of faith and power. Look at the elaborate costumes, almost like costumes for actors. Notice, too, the fantastical, slightly absurd architecture in the background; doesn’t it remind you a little of stage sets? Editor: It does! And the way everyone is arranged—it's almost like a tableau. But what's the deal with that unusual building looming in the background? Curator: That's the really delicious part! It evokes the exotic "East," full of orientalist fantasies prevalent at the time in Venice. For Venetians of Carpaccio’s era, places like modern Turkey or Jerusalem held an allure, a source of both fascination and anxiety. I suspect he wanted to evoke a sense of a world both strange and wondrous, right there in Venice. It's kinda hilarious, no? Editor: Ha! Totally! It makes it feel so much more layered, as if it is some sort of history meets theatre, mixed with fantasy. Thanks! Curator: Absolutely. What struck me again is Carpaccio’s audacity – to create such an elaborate stage for this seemingly simple act. His choices certainly make a statement!
