Editor: This is Richard Deacon's *This, That And The Other*. I'm really drawn to the industrial feel of the materials, like repurposed conveyor belts. What do you see in this piece? Curator: I see an embrace of the everyday, of labor and materiality. It challenges the traditional hierarchy separating "high art" from functional objects. How does Deacon transform these industrial materials through process? Editor: He bends and shapes them, almost defying their original purpose. It makes you think about where these materials come from and their previous lives. Curator: Precisely! The work becomes a commentary on consumption and the life cycle of materials within our industrial society. What have you learned? Editor: The focus on materials really changes how I see sculpture.

Deacon was one of the leading British sculptors to emerge in the 1980s. The sweeping curves of his large-scale works often suggest organic forms. At the same time, many of Deacon's sculptures draw attention to their process of manufacture and use of urban and industrial materials. In this work, the laminated hardboard edges and carefully riveted surfaces contrast with the fringe-like shapelessness of the canvas. Gallery label, August 2004
