This dynamic print, "Our Fleet Crushing the Chinese Fleet off Dagushan", was made by Kobayashi Ikuhide, using traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques. The image bursts with action. The contrast between the solid forms of the ships and the energetic waves conveys the intensity of battle. Look closely, and you'll see how each element is carefully carved into separate woodblocks, then inked and pressed onto paper, layer by layer. The choice of wood as a material connects this print to a long lineage of Japanese craftsmanship, but this medium is used to depict a very modern subject: naval warfare. Consider the sheer labor involved in creating such a detailed image through this process. This meticulous work stands in stark contrast to the speed and efficiency of the modern warships it portrays, symbols of industrialization and military might. By understanding the traditional making process behind this print, we can see how it captures a moment of transition, where traditional artistry meets the power of modern industry.
