Necklace c. 20th century

This silver necklace, made by an anonymous artist, embodies a process of careful assembly and arrangement. The uniform, spherical beads create a rhythmic sequence, each one reflecting light in its own way. I’m drawn to the way the ‘squash blossom’ pendants are attached to the strand. Each has a slight tilt and imperfection, a testament to the human hand and the artist's intuitive placement. The surface of the silver has a soft, almost powdery texture, giving it a tactile quality. This contrasts with the smooth, polished turquoise stones that punctuate the pendant, adding a pop of color and visual interest. The artist has carefully considered the balance between the matte silver and the glossy turquoise. The necklace has a kinship with the work of a sculptor like Louise Bourgeois, who also explored themes of adornment and personal symbolism.
