This -Crusade of Rescue Homes for Destitute Children- still bank, was likely made with printed paper and wood by an anonymous artist. Look at the faux roof tiles, and how they create a feeling of home, a feeling reinforced by the boxy shape. The colors are muted, not quite bright, which gives it a feeling of aged history. The surface looks papery. There are printed images on the sides, with words layered on top, telling a story. Everything is a bit faded, like a half-remembered song. I'm particularly drawn to how the words are arranged and the fonts that are used, which give it an anonymous authority. It reminds me a little bit of Joseph Cornell’s boxes, the way he used found images and text to create a dreamlike, miniature world. Art is like a game of telephone, isn’t it? We all borrow and transform, creating something new from something old.
