George Hendrik Breitner made this sketch of a man and woman in Amsterdam with graphite on paper. Rather than laboring over a meticulous rendering, Breitner quickly captured a fleeting scene on a page of his calendar, using a blunt, expressive line. The inherent qualities of graphite – its softness and capacity for both smudging and sharp definition – are fully exploited here. Notice how Breitner uses bold strokes to define the figures’ forms, contrasting with lighter, scribbled lines to suggest movement and atmosphere. The visible texture of the paper adds to the sketch’s immediacy. Given the quick, unlabored marks, the work emphasizes the direct connection between the artist’s hand and the depicted subject. Breitner was engaging with a changing world – one of increasing industrialization and urbanization. He was not after a classical, static image, but a modern snapshot. In doing so, he embraced the humble materials of everyday life to reflect the dynamic, gritty reality of Amsterdam’s streets. It’s a reminder that art can be found not only in grand gestures, but also in the simple act of looking and recording.
