Pieter Jansz created this oblong cartouche with two putti in the 17th century using pen and gray ink, with a gray wash on paper. The design arranges ornate features around a central void, immediately drawing the eye to the blank space, framed by a rectangle that provides a sense of order amidst the flourish. Note the symmetrical placement of the putti and the serpentine ribbons that give the composition a dynamic balance. The gray wash adds depth, modeling forms and creating contrast. The cartouche, beyond its aesthetic appeal, functions as a semiotic device, ready to carry symbolic weight. Jansz’s formal choices aren't just decorative, they embody the era’s intellectual tensions between the earthly and the divine, structure and ornamentation. The blank space invites contemplation of what could fill it.
