Alphonse Mucha made this drawing, Evocation, using paper and red chalk. The choice of red chalk gives the artwork a warm, ethereal quality. Red chalk, also called sanguine, is the oldest known form of drawing medium. Mucha's delicate use of this medium shows his academic training, and echoes the old masters. Note the way that he models the figure, using very subtle gradations to suggest her drapery and the flowers she holds. The drawing is not merely about the representation of the figure, but is also about the very act of drawing itself.
