This Romantic Landscape was made by Konstantin Bogaevsky at some point, though when exactly is a mystery. It's an interesting mix of something solid and something dissolving. Look at the sky here; it’s like he's scrubbed away at the paint, making these cloudy, ghost-like shapes. The way he’s handled the watercolor, so thin and washy, gives everything this dreamy, almost blurry quality. But then, the trees in the foreground are darker, more defined, creating this push and pull. There's a particular tree near the center, it’s got this long thin trunk and a puffy head of leaves, like a lollipop; it’s kind of goofy, but endearing. Bogaevsky's work reminds me of some of the Symbolist painters, like Odilon Redon, with their emphasis on inner visions and emotional landscapes. It's about embracing the weirdness, the ambiguity, and the multiple ways of seeing.
