Sasza Blonder made this stylized landscape with oil paint, and what grabs me first are the colors. They’re so…not quite! Like a memory of a landscape. The paint has this beautiful, chalky surface, kind of matte. It’s not trying to trick you into thinking it’s a real place. Instead, it’s all about how Blonder laid down these delicious, buttery marks. Notice the pink tree, almost neon, with those strong black branches reaching up – it's so direct. Then there's the sun, like a big copper coin in the corner. It reminds me of Milton Avery, that way of simplifying and flattening space. But Blonder has a rawer edge, a kind of joyful awkwardness. It feels like he's less interested in getting it "right," and more in the sheer pleasure of pushing paint around. Like he is saying something heartfelt without using too many words.
