These are a pair of sauceboats made by Edgar M. Eoff, currently residing at The Art Institute of Chicago. The reflective surfaces catch the light, and their graceful, curving forms suggest movement and fluidity. The material itself speaks of luxury. Notice how the artist employs symmetry and balance in the overall design, which is rooted in classical forms. Yet, the elaboration of the decorative elements disrupts any sense of pure symmetry. The handles mirror the curve of the spouts, creating a visual harmony that pleases the eye. Meanwhile, the beaded edges and foliate motifs introduce a level of detail that engages us. These details play with our perception of function versus decoration. Are they purely utilitarian objects, or do they serve a more symbolic purpose? The contrast between the smooth, polished surfaces and the intricate ornamentation invites us to consider the cultural codes embedded within such objects. These sauceboats thus become more than vessels, they are artifacts of taste and refinement.
