James McBey produced this etching of ‘Rouen’ sometime during his career that spanned the first half of the 20th Century. It pictures a quiet moment in the life of a medieval city that would have already endured centuries of social and political upheaval. The etching depicts the northern French city as seen from across the river, dominated by the imposing presence of its cathedral. The city appears somewhat timeless and still today Rouen remains largely defined by the architecture shown here. The image is divided into zones. The leafless trees on the bank contrast with the towers and spires of the religious buildings in the center. The dark figures on the bank in the foreground create a sense of depth. McBey's choice of subject suggests an appreciation for history and tradition. To fully appreciate a work like this, historians often consult period maps, photographs, and social documents. By examining the work in its historical context we can better understand its meaning and enduring appeal.
