Fernand Léger made this painting, Mother and Child, on an unrecorded date using black paint on canvas. What strikes me most are the heavy outlines. Léger seems to have embraced the simplicity of forms, using thick black lines to define shapes and figures. This approach really flattens the image, creating a kind of graphic feel that’s both modern and timeless. And the color palette? It's almost monochromatic, with just the interplay between the stark black and the creamy ground of the canvas. See how the black line varies? Sometimes it’s thick and bold, and other times it seems to waver, like Léger was feeling his way through the image. I love how that imperfection gives the painting a kind of raw, immediate energy. You know, it makes me think of Picasso and his explorations of form. Léger, like Picasso, seemed to be constantly pushing the boundaries of representation. Anyway, that’s just my two cents. What do you see?
