Editor: This is Richard Serra's "Screech". The stark contrast between the black circle and the textured white space is compelling. What formal elements stand out to you? Curator: The interaction of mass and void is quite striking. Note how the density of the black contour is activated by the subtle grid within the negative space. Does this tension affect the perceived volume of the work? Editor: It definitely feels like the black form is pressing inward, almost flattening the space. I hadn't noticed the grid before, either. Thanks for pointing that out! Curator: Consider how Serra exploits the materiality of his medium to further enhance this effect. The coarse texture contributes to the overall sensory experience.
