This leather book cover with pressed fish and butterfly designs was crafted by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. Look at how the designs are pressed into the leather, so tactile and inviting. It's all about the process, isn't it? The way the artist worked with the material, pressing and shaping it to create these wonderful images. The symmetry in the left corner of the cover adds a layer of complexity, contrasting the flowing lines of the fish and butterflies elsewhere. I’m really drawn to the way the artist used texture to bring the images to life. You can almost feel the scales of the fish and the delicate wings of the butterflies. It reminds me a little of the work of M.C. Escher, another Dutch artist with a knack for the unexpected. There is a constant exchange of ideas across time, you know.
