Charity, Children: United States. New York. Pleasantville. Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society: Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society Orphan Asylum, Pleasantville, New York: "Fellowship House, 32 West 115th Street, New York City. After Care Department of the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Orphan Asylum. It is located in an attractive building, equipped with club rooms, social rooms, game rooms, lecture halls, etc. It maintains an Employment Bureau, and provides friends for the children as they leave the institution. It gets in touch and maintains friendly relations with large numbers of our Alumni, and is aiding very materially in bridging over one of the most dangerous periods in the life of the dependent child, the age between sixteen and eighteen years." Editor: This photograph by Apeda Studio depicts the Fellowship House, a support center for the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Orphan Asylum. The building’s architecture feels incredibly solid and stoic. What story does this photograph tell, in your opinion? Curator: It whispers of transitions, doesn’t it? This solid, almost fortress-like structure, was a bridge. A bridge for children stepping out of institutional care into the world. It’s beautiful and sad, a bit like that awkward dance between childhood and adulthood, permanence and impermanence. I wonder what dreams those walls have witnessed? What do you think? Editor: I hadn't thought of it that way, as a transition space. It feels less imposing now, and more...hopeful, maybe? Curator: Exactly! It’s a building filled with stories, waiting to be heard.
