This is a stoneware jug, probably made sometime in the late 16th or early 17th century by Engel Kran. The "Susanna jug" depicts the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders, a narrative laden with themes of voyeurism, sexual harassment, and female virtue. Susanna, spied upon while bathing, is then blackmailed and threatened with false accusations. It is important to remember that during the Renaissance, stories like Susanna’s were often used to negotiate complex societal attitudes towards women, morality, and justice. The jug could be seen as reflecting the gender dynamics and moral anxieties of its time, capturing the vulnerability of women and their struggle for justice in a patriarchal society. Yet, the very act of depicting Susanna on a jug, an everyday object, also invites a kind of scrutiny and consumption, blurring the lines between moral lesson and objectification. This jug serves not just as a historical artifact but as a mirror reflecting ongoing societal debates about gender, power, and representation.

The body of this large pitcher is embellished with scenes from the story of the chaste Susanna. When the beautiful Susanna refused to submit to the dishonourable proposals of two elderly men, they accused her of adultery. However, the young Daniel exposed the two greybeards as liars. The two men suffered a gruesome death.
