This print, titled "Lente," or "Spring," was created in 1718 using engraving on paper. The engraver has used line work to create a scene, seemingly of leisure, in which figures are tending to the garden and enjoying each other's company. The nature of printmaking is that it allows for distribution and thus, democratization of imagery. This particular scene reminds us that even something as seemingly simple as a garden is often the product of labor. Note the figure on the right, who is carrying a heavy jug, while the couple in the center appear to be enjoying the literal fruits of her labor. In this way, the image, although a product of mechanical reproduction, also draws attention to the social dynamics of labor, class, and leisure.
