Curator: Here we have what's titled "Imperial Red Toner Light, Litho P Red Medium," manufactured by Imperial Paper & Color Corp. Editor: It's a rather compelling image. The saturated red pigment within the clear glass jar evokes a visceral response, almost like a specimen. Curator: Precisely. Think about the context. This pigment exists as a product of industrial processes, intended to be used in the creation of printed materials. Editor: It highlights the commodification of color itself. The label, the corporate branding, it's all part of this system. "Ba Salt" is handwritten on the bottom. Curator: The means of production were not always clearly delineated. Materials, even colors, carry their own histories of labor and extraction within the socio-political landscape. Editor: Looking at the color chart, I am reminded that the whole spectrum of color is available through industry. Curator: Indeed, this single jar represents a small but significant element within a much larger system. Editor: I now find myself reflecting on the industrial forces which shape even our perception of color.
