In 2001, John Armleder created this work, simply called "Target," using neon lights, a medium charged with modernity. The bullseye, a form deeply embedded in our collective psyche, carries a fascinating history. The concentric rings, drawing the eye inexorably to the center, evoke not only precision and focus, but also the ancient symbol of the mandala. From Hindu and Buddhist traditions to Carl Jung's psychological diagrams, the mandala serves as a representation of the cosmos and the self. The target, then, may not only be an indication of precision but also a means of meditation, engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level. The vibrant neon hues remind us of advertising, the art of persuasion. Thus, the act of targeting transforms into one of attraction and promise. The target has resurfaced, evolved, and taken on new meanings throughout time. This symbol continues to resonate, inviting us to reflect on the nature of intention, desire, and the pursuit of the very center of our being.
