Edward White's 'Toleware Tea Cannister' seems to have emerged stroke by stroke in watercolor, with a palette of black, red, yellow, and green. I can imagine him carefully building up the layers of black wash, trying to get that perfect density and sheen. The red circle is the focal point, surrounded by these swooping stylized leaves in bright yellow and deep green. There's a certain charming awkwardness to the composition, a kind of folk art directness that I find really appealing. Looking at this, I'm reminded of other self-taught painters who embraced the simplicity of everyday forms. I bet White was fully absorbed in this piece; each brushstroke a meditation on shape, color, and surface. It's like he's speaking to us across time, sharing a quiet moment of creative expression. And, isn’t that what painting is all about?
