Rudolf Jobst made this photograph of two models in embroidered coats and hats from the Wiener Werkstätte, but we don’t know exactly when. It seems to me that the picture is not the point, but rather the presentation of the coats. I’m really taken by the details of the embroidered mantles. The way the fabric folds and drapes, catching the light and shadow, gives the embroidery a three-dimensional quality. You know, when I look closely, I start to think about the labor involved. Each stitch, each tiny decision about color and placement, contributes to the overall effect. It's easy to overlook the process when you see the finished product, but I think that’s where the real story lies. This piece reminds me of Gustav Klimt, who also explored surface decoration in his paintings. In the end, this image reminds us that art is always a conversation, a back-and-forth between ideas and techniques, across time and space.
