Editor: This is "Deux figures auréolées en prière" – Two haloed figures in prayer – created by Salvador Dalí in 1964, using ink and what looks like watercolor on paper. The overall mood is pretty somber and spiritual, I think. What do you see in this piece? Curator: I see Dalí reaching for a visual language that transcends the immediate moment, tapping into a wellspring of shared cultural memory. Those haloed figures, reduced to essential forms, become potent symbols. Think about how halos have been employed across cultures to signify holiness or enlightenment. What feelings does this imagery invoke in you? Editor: It feels very traditional but with that signature Dalí twist. Like he’s playing with established religious iconography but in a really abstract way. The ink blots almost disrupt the serenity. Curator: Exactly. It's the tension between the expected serenity of prayer and the chaotic splashes of ink that’s fascinating. Note also the negative space—the void surrounding the figures. Consider how that emptiness influences our interpretation. Is it a representation of doubt, isolation, or perhaps the vastness of the divine? Editor: That’s a great point; it's ambiguous, really. I initially focused on the figures themselves, but the emptiness around them gives them a new significance. I guess the symbols we see depend so much on what we bring to the image. Curator: Precisely. Symbols are never static. They evolve with us, shaped by our personal histories and the collective narratives of our culture. This piece exemplifies how a simple image can carry a multitude of meanings, inviting contemplation and revealing something new each time we view it. I find the conversation with symbols, both personal and historical, ever evolving.
